Ein neuer Tag beginnt und der Mann geht in die Arbeit. Er geht durch die Stadt. Die Arbeit ist lang und der Tag zu kurz. Das Leben ist hart, aber der Mann arbeitet weiter. Die Arbeit ist vorbei und der Mann hat eine Frage. Wo ist der Weg nach Hause? Er hat Zeit, aber in diesem Fall ist das nicht genug.
The man and the woman have a small child. The child is like a little friend. The man needs money for the child. He works. A new day begins and the man goes to work. He walks through the city. The work is long and the day too short. Life is hard, but the man keeps working. The work is over and the man has a question. Where is the way home? He has time, but in this case that is not enough.
Open Chapter 1 Chapter 2 · Das Wort und das Wasser A0Der Mann geht durch die große Stadt. Er sieht einen Fluss. Das Wasser ist kalt und hoch. Sein Auge sieht das kalte Wasser. Er geht weiter. Der Mann denkt. Er weiß, dass sein Kind ein neues Buch will. Er geht in die Buchhandlung. Er kauft ein neues Buch. Das Buch hat viele Seiten. Er weiß jetzt, wo der Weg nach Hause ist. Die Frau wartet. Er läuft weiter. Sein Kind ist glücklich. Er mag das neue Buch. Das Kind sagt ein Wort. Danke! Das Kind nimmt die Hand von dem Mann.
The man walks through the big city. He sees a river. The water is cold and high. His eye sees the cold water. He walks on. The man thinks. He knows that his child wants a new book. He goes into the bookstore. He buys a new book. The book has many pages. He now knows where the way home is. The woman waits. He walks on. His child is happy. He likes the new book. The child says a word. Thank you! The child takes the hand of the man.
Open Chapter 2 Chapter 3 · Das Buch und der Tisch A0Der Mann und das Kind lesen zusammen. Die Frau steht bei der Tür und hört zu. Es macht Spaß. Das Buch hat eine Seite über die Arbeit. Die Arbeit ist schwer, sagt der Mann. Das Kind sagt ja. Die Frau sagt: „Wir müssen jetzt das Essen machen.“ Das Kind will helfen, aber es ist noch zu jung und klein. Es darf nur am Tisch sitzen.
The man and the child read together. The woman stands by the door and listens. It's fun. The book has a page about work. The work is hard, says the man. The child says yes. The woman says: "We have to make the food now." The child wants to help, but it is still too young and small. It may only sit at the table.
Open Chapter 3 Chapter 4 · Ein neuer Tag und eine alte Frage A0Ein neuer Tag kommt. Der Kopf von dem Mann ist schwer, weil er wenig Zeit zum Schlafen hat. Wer bringt das Geld heute? Er muss wieder in die große Stadt gehen. Er fragt die Frau: „Warum ist das Leben so lang und schwer?“ Die Frau nimmt seine Hand. Sie sagt: „Es ist nicht immer hart. Wir haben ein eigenes Land hier im Haus.“ Der Mann denkt. Dann geht er durch die Tür.
A new day comes. The man's head is heavy, because he has little time to sleep. Who brings the money today? He has to go into the big city again. He asks the woman: "Why is life so long and hard?" The woman takes his hand. She says: "It's not always hard. We have our own country here in the house." The man thinks. Then he goes through the door.
Open Chapter 4 Chapter 5 · Der Weg durch die Welt A0Der Mann geht einen anderen Weg. Der Weg geht durch das Land. Er sieht die Welt. Die Welt ist groß. Dieser Teil ist klein. Er sieht einen alten Mann. Der Mann heißt Herr Grün. Er ist ein Freund. Der Freund sagt ein Wort: „Tag!“ Der Mann sagt: „Das Kind ist gut, aber wir haben wenig Geld.“ Der Freund gibt Geld für die Arbeit. Der Mann kann lachen. Er ist auch glücklich.
The man goes a different way. The way goes through the country. He sees the world. The world is big. This part is small. He sees an old man. The man’s name is Mr. Grün. He is a friend. The friend says a word: "Hi!" The man says: "The child is good, but we have little money." The friend gives money for the work. The man can laugh. He is also happy.
Open Chapter 5 Chapter 6 · Ein freier Tag in der Stadt A0Ein Tag ist frei. Der Mann, die Frau und das Kind gehen in die Stadt. Sie wollen viel sehen. Sie wollen viel tun. Die Sonne steht sehr hoch. Ein einzelnes Kind ist dort. Es spielt mit dem Wasser. Das Kind läuft zu dem anderen Kind. Sie werden Freunde. Sie sitzen unter der Sonne. Die Frau sagt: „Das ist der erste Tag im Jahr.“ Sie lassen die Kinder dort. Sie bleiben eine lange Zeit.
A day is free. The man, the woman, and the child go into the city. They want to see a lot. They want to do a lot. The sun stands very high. A single child is there. It plays with the water. The child runs to the other child. They become friends. They sit under the sun. The woman says: "This is the first day of the year." They leave the children there. They stay a long time.
Open Chapter 6 Chapter 7 · Das Buch auf der letzten Seite A0Es wird schon spät. Sie gehen nach Hause. Das Kind liegt im Bett, aber es kann nicht schlafen. Es will das Buch. Der Mann nimmt das Buch. Er sieht auf die erste Seite. Dann liest er die letzte Seite. Das Kind schließt das Auge. Der Kopf liegt auf dem Bett. Der Mann lässt das Buch auf dem Tisch liegen. Er weiß jetzt: Das Kind ist sein ganzes Leben.
It's already getting late. They go home. The child lies in bed, but it can’t sleep. It wants the book. The man takes the book. He looks at the first page. Then he reads the last page. The child closes its eye. The head lies on the bed. The man leaves the book lying on the table. He knows now: The child is his whole life.
Open Chapter 7 Chapter 8 · Das Geld und die Arbeit A0Ein neuer Tag beginnt. Der Mann muss in die Stadt gehen. Er darf nicht spät kommen. Er muss arbeiten. Er denkt: „Ich kann viel tun, wenn ich will.“ Er arbeitet mit der Hand. Er arbeitet mit dem Kopf. Die Arbeit ist gut. Am Ende hat er das Geld. Er hat jetzt mehr Geld als im letzten Jahr. Er will ein neues Haus finden.
A new day begins. The man has to go into the city. He may not come late. He has to work. He thinks: "I can do a lot, if I want to." He works with his hand. He works with his head. The work is good. In the end, he has the money. He now has more money than in the last year. He wants to find a new house.
Open Chapter 8 Chapter 9 · Eine Frage an die Frau A0Der Mann kommt in das Haus. Er hat das Geld. Er hat eine Frage für die Frau. Er sagt: „Können wir ein anderes Haus haben? Ein großes Haus für das Kind?“ Die Frau sieht den Mann an. Was soll sie sagen? Sie weiß es nicht. Ist das neue Haus gut oder ist das alte Haus besser? Sie sagt: „Wir müssen denken. Ein Haus braucht viel Geld.“
The man comes into the house. He has the money. He has a question for the woman. He says: "Can we have a different house? A big house for the child?" The woman looks at the man. What should she say? She doesn’t know. Is the new house good, or is the old house better? She says: "We have to think. A house needs a lot of money."
Open Chapter 9 Chapter 10 · Die ganze Welt im Haus A0Die Zeit vergeht. Das Jahr vergeht. Das Kind wird alt. Es ist nicht mehr klein. Das Kind versteht jedes Wort, das der Mann und die Frau sagen. Sie bleiben in dem Haus. Das Kind nimmt ein deutsches Buch. Es lernt die Worte. Sie haben alles: Zeit, Leben und ein gutes Haus. Ihre eigene Welt ist hier. Sie sind frei.
Time passes. The year passes. The child grows old. It is no longer small. The child understands every word that the man and the woman say. They stay in the house. The child takes a German book. It learns the words. They have everything: time, life, and a good house. Their own world is here. They are free.
